A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, has caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the area. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) has stated that it is premature to determine the impact on the project’s timeline due to the incident.
The fire occurred near the waterfront of the hamlet on Wednesday night. Naujaat’s senior administrative officer, Chantal Pelletier, confirmed that the local fire department promptly responded to the situation. The NHC revealed that the materials were meant for an eight-unit public housing initiative.
Following the fire, NHC representatives are awaiting the fire chief’s assessment report. They are collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the damage incurred. The completion date for the eight-plex is set for June 2027, but the officials are uncertain about any potential delays caused by the fire.
The RCMP spokesperson noted that there is currently no information available regarding the fire’s cause or any ongoing investigations by the police.
