After an extensive four-year search, authorities finally located Tom Phillips, a father who had disappeared with his three young children following a dispute with their mother.
The children, Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, aged eight, seven, and five at the time, were found living in harsh conditions in a makeshift camp in the wilderness. Their father, who had been denied custody, had them living outdoors in unsanitary conditions.
In September 2025, authorities apprehended Tom Phillips in Marokopa, New Zealand, after reports emerged that he had been shot by the police during a failed burglary attempt. Alongside this news, disturbing details about the children’s living situation were uncovered.
It was revealed that Phillips and his children were residing in a filthy camp deep within the New Zealand wilderness, with the children subsisting on animal feed. The camp, described as unsuitable for children by the police, contained various types of animal feed typically used for livestock.
Upon investigation, authorities also discovered firearms and ammunition at the site. Maverick Phillips, one of Tom’s children, was found armed with a gun when police arrived, but he was persuaded to lower his weapon.
A local landowner mentioned that the location of the campsite made it easy to remain hidden, as the area was dense with bush and difficult to access.
Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders described the location as challenging to reach and well-hidden, suggesting that the family may have had assistance in moving frequently.
Following his disappearance from the family farm in Marokopa in 2021, Tom Phillips was finally located. Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers confirmed the children were physically unharmed, emphasizing the importance of their mental well-being.
The children’s mother, known as Cat, expressed a mix of relief and sadness at the conclusion of the four-year ordeal, stating that the children were dearly missed and that their return marked the beginning of a journey towards recovery.
