Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia have progressed to the next round at the Cincinnati Open. They secured a victory against the fourth-seeded duo of Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 of the women’s doubles competition on Monday, after a match lasting one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the debut of Dabrowski and Krejcikova as a doubles partnership. They are set to compete against the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16 scheduled for Tuesday.
In another match, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Que., and her teammate Sara Errani from Italy secured a hard-fought victory against Tamara Korpatsch from Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith in a match lasting one hour and 29 minutes on Monday night. Fernandez and Errani clinched the first set in 31 minutes, but faced strong opposition in the second set as their opponents took a lead of 6-5 and served for the win, only to falter in closing the match.
Fernandez and Errani’s performance included two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and just nine unforced errors out of a total of 34. They are now gearing up to face Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia in the Round of 16. Fernandez had a setback on Sunday when she was defeated by Xiyu Wang from China in the women’s singles event.
