“Critical Phase in Ukraine Peace Talks as Putin Urged to Halt Violence”

The peace talks concerning Ukraine are currently in a critical phase, with 10 Downing Street emphasizing the need for Vladimir Putin to halt the violence and participate in the negotiations. This statement follows remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that an agreement to end the conflict is nearing completion after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida.

While progress has been made on a security guarantee agreement, both leaders acknowledged the existence of unresolved issues. Keir Starmer’s spokesperson expressed optimism for a just and enduring peace deal but raised concerns over recent Russian attacks on Ukraine. The spokesperson urged Putin to demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace through actions.

Zelensky disclosed that the US has proposed security assurances for 15 years, but he seeks a longer commitment to deter Russian aggression. He stressed the necessity of security guarantees for resolving the conflict and expressed hope for negotiations to reach a critical point soon.

Although the specifics of the security assurances remain undisclosed, Zelensky mentioned the involvement of partners, which could be a contentious issue given Putin’s opposition to NATO troop deployments in Ukraine. Meanwhile, reports indicate Russian advancements in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, with Putin expected to engage in talks with Trump while no communication with Zelensky is anticipated.

Trump expressed optimism about progress in the peace process, indicating a willingness from both sides to achieve a resolution. Plans are underway for further discussions involving European leaders and a Ukrainian delegation in January, potentially in Washington.
