Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris with new insights on her health struggles and treatment journey. In an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Canadian music icon shared her battle with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological autoimmune disorder she was diagnosed with in 2022 after experiencing symptoms for 17 years.
The excruciating pain, which intensified in 2020, often left Dion struggling to walk and dependent on high doses of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that affects a minute percentage of the population, characterized by muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While no specific treatment is currently approved for this disorder, various therapies can help manage its symptoms.
Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would conceal her pain by attributing show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections. The singer expressed feeling conflicted about deceiving her fans and recognized their unwavering support as the driving force behind seeking comprehensive treatment.
Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all future performances. Despite her absence from the stage since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is set to make a comeback in September. She has been diligently following a rigorous recovery routine involving medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been engaging in 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming shows.
Describing Dion as constantly in motion and wary of being still for too long due to fear of stiffness, the Harper’s article highlighted her profound gratitude for the opportunity to perform again. The singer acknowledged the miraculous nature of her recovery and emphasized not taking her regained ability for granted.
Looking ahead to her Paris residency, which spans from September 12 to May 29 next year and includes 26 concerts, Dion expressed a mix of strength, excitement, and nervousness as she readies herself for her highly anticipated return to the stage.
