Anthony Joshua’s Nigerian driver faces ‘reckless driving’ charges

Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is expected to face charges of ‘reckless driving’ by the police following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. The individual, a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, who has been with him during his visits to the country, is set to be formally charged within the next 48 hours, as reported by The Daily Mail.

After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was transported to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred earlier this week. He underwent hours of questioning and provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the accident, which claimed the lives of Joshua’s friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.

Following his own discharge from the hospital, Joshua, accompanied by his mother, paid tribute to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK. According to a police source cited by the Mail, the driver, who sustained minor injuries, was released after treatment and subsequently taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. A charging decision is expected within the next couple of days, although potential delays due to the holiday period are acknowledged, with the charge likely to be related to reckless driving.

The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck fled the scene and is now wanted by the authorities. Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding and a burst tire on the passenger side of the SUV contributed to the loss of control and subsequent collision with the truck. Tributes poured in for Ghami and Ayodele, with Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom, Joshua’s promotional company, expressing his condolences on Instagram.

In a separate development, Sky has announced a price reduction for its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering significant savings and an increased number of live matches across various leagues, including the Premier League and EFL. Sky will broadcast over 200 live Premier League matches next season, marking a substantial increase from previous seasons.
