Aldi has announced intentions to launch 40 new stores in the UK this year, with a £370 million investment plan. The expansion will include locations such as Southam in Warwickshire, Hastings in East Sussex, and Amersham in Buckinghamshire. This initiative is part of a broader £1.6 billion investment strategy over two years, aiming to reach a total of 1,500 stores in the UK.
During 2025, newly opened Aldi stores were established in Kirkintilloch, Eastbourne, Fulham Broadway, and Deeside. Giles Hurley, the Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the company’s dedication to providing high-quality yet affordable groceries to all consumers. He stated that the expansion plans for 2026 are tailored to address areas lacking an Aldi presence, aligning with the long-term objective of 1,500 stores nationwide.
Aldi was recognized as the UK’s most cost-effective supermarket by Which? for the fifth consecutive year. Additionally, the supermarket secured The Grocer’s ‘Super Grocer 33’ award for the seventh time, reaffirming its reputation for providing exceptional value to British shoppers. Aldi also recently announced wage increases for store employees, with hourly rates set to rise nationally and within the M25 region, effective from March 1, 2026.
Moreover, Aldi’s consistent affordability was acknowledged by Which? as it emerged as the cheapest supermarket in 2025 for ten months, with Lidl claiming the title twice. The average price difference between Aldi and Lidl throughout the year was minimal. In December, Aldi maintained its affordability, offering a list of 68 items for an average cost of £123.60, closely followed by Lidl at £123.70. Comparatively, Asda and Tesco had higher average costs for the same items during that month.
By prioritizing accessibility and affordability, Aldi continues to strengthen its position as a preferred shopping destination for UK consumers.
