Blue Jays Legend Buck Martinez Inducted into Hall of Excellence

John Albert (Buck) Martinez, a cancer survivor and prominent figure in Toronto Blue Jays history as a catcher, manager, and broadcaster over five decades, was recently inducted into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence.

The Blue Jays introduced this section as part of their 50th season celebrations to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the franchise. The Hall of Excellence, situated behind right field at Rogers Centre, pays tribute to 11 distinguished individuals previously recognized on the Level of Excellence.

Martinez, aged 77, received this honor during a ceremony before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners. Known for his extensive tenure as a team broadcaster, which concluded last winter, Martinez expressed his surprise and gratitude for the recognition.

During the induction event, Martinez shared a heartwarming encounter with a new acquaintance, Brett Bateman, who appreciated Martinez’s impact on the Blue Jays and their loyal fan base. Martinez recounted an incident in England where his recognizable voice drew attention from passersby, showcasing the widespread recognition and admiration he enjoys among Canadians.

Joining a prestigious group of honorees, including Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, and Roy Halladay, Martinez’s induction marked a significant milestone in his storied career with the Blue Jays. The Level of Excellence, where the names of past greats are currently displayed, will be relocated within the stadium next year for continued fan visibility.

Reflecting on his time with the team, Martinez, who battled cancer diagnoses during his career, highlighted his experiences as a catcher, manager, and broadcaster. His legacy extends beyond his on-field contributions, as he has left a lasting impact on the Blue Jays organization and its supporters.

Martinez, who now resides in Florida, traveled to Toronto alongside fellow Blue Jays luminaries for the induction ceremony. Former teammate Dave Stieb praised Martinez’s supportive presence and calming influence during their time together.

The newly established Hall of Excellence aims to honor diverse figures associated with the Blue Jays, ensuring that their legacy endures for generations of fans. Martinez’s remarkable career, spanning his playing days to his broadcasting achievements, solidifies his place among the franchise’s most revered personalities.

Throughout his broadcasting tenure, which began in 1982 while still an active player, Martinez called over 4,000 Blue Jays games. His final broadcast came during the World Series, where he shared the booth with longtime partner Dan Shulman.

Martinez’s broadcasting reach extended to various media platforms, including ESPN, TBS, and MLB International, showcasing his expertise and passion for baseball. In recognition of his significant contributions to the sport in Canada, Martinez received the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.
