Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, during the weekend to enjoy performances by their favorite artists. The gathering was part of a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.
Daisy Chain Fields, a charitable music festival organized by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, drew inspiration from the iconic Lilith Fair of the 1990s by featuring an all-female lineup. The event showcased a blend of established and emerging stars, including Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, and Garbage.
Before the festival commenced, Rodrigo revealed that a remarkable $10 million had been raised for the event’s ten nonprofit partners. This amount was later doubled to $20 million through a matching donation by Melinda French Gates. The funds raised supported organizations like Planned Parenthood, the National Institute for Reproductive Health, and the Black Mamas Matter Alliance.
Rodrigo announced the festival back in June, emphasizing that all artists performed for free, with proceeds directed to charities advocating for women and girls. The event featured special appearances by music icons such as Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette, and Sarah McLachlan, who joined Rodrigo on stage for memorable performances.
The festival’s title, “Daisy Chain,” symbolized unity and strength derived from individual contributions coming together as a whole. Against the backdrop of ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the U.S., Daisy Chain Fields served as a beacon of empowerment and solidarity for women.
In addition to the music performances, attendees had the opportunity to engage with various art installations and exhibits, including a LEGO mural and a display highlighting the Riot Grrrl movement. Notable activist groups like Guerrilla Girls used their platform to advocate for important social issues during the event.
Despite the scorching temperatures that soared above 33 degrees Celsius, festivalgoers like Chase Martinez described the experience as unparalleled, labeling Daisy Chain Fields as the “best festival ever.” The philanthropy village known as Daisy Chain Reaction provided a unique opportunity for attendees to learn about and support the work of the nonprofit partners.
Reflecting on the festival, participants and nonprofit partners expressed gratitude and optimism for the future of women’s rights advocacy. The event underscored the resilience and unity within the community, sending a powerful message of solidarity and support.
