The International Swimming League (ISL) is set to make a comeback after a five-year break with an All-Star Match scheduled at the London Aquatics Centre on December 19, as announced by the league. This event will showcase top swimmers from around the world competing for a significant prize pool, with specific details to be revealed later. Notable swimmers like Caeleb Dressel from the USA, Adam Peaty from Britain, and Katinka Hosszu from Hungary have participated in past ISL events.
The decision to hold this event aligns with the plans discussed by ISL Commissioner Ben Allen last year. He expressed the league’s intention to resume activities in the fall of 2026 with a revised commercial strategy focused on diversifying funding sources through sponsorships and media partnerships, reducing reliance on a single investor. The ISL, established in 2019 to offer a professional competition outside the Olympic calendar, last conducted a season in 2021.
Following disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and challenges faced by the league’s main supporter, Ukrainian businessman Konstantin Grigorishin, the ISL temporarily paused its operations. In December, Allen outlined initial plans for a comeback season featuring seven matches across North America and Europe, with potential events in Asia and the Middle East. Considering a condensed one-day competition format compared to the previous two-day structure was also under consideration.
In July, the ISL committed to settling overdue prize money owed to approximately 300 athletes from the 2021 season. The recent announcement indicates that the London All-Star Match will serve as a test for this streamlined approach before a broader relaunch. Allen emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “The All-Star Match is the highly anticipated moment for swimming, bringing the world’s top athletes back to the ISL stage.” He praised London as the ideal host city with a venue designed for such occasions and a passionate sporting audience.
The London Aquatics Centre, constructed for the 2012 Olympics, has a history of hosting major international swimming competitions. The ISL will disclose further details in the future, including the participating swimmers, match format, ticketing information, and broadcasting arrangements.
