Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who went missing following the devastating floods in the Nepal-China border region has been located unharmed. The individual had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash floods occurred a week ago when a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China. The disaster resulted in significant loss and destruction.
Over 1,100 individuals lost their lives, and more than 3,900 people are still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry reports that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are also missing.
In response to the crisis, Canada is set to dispatch over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region. This aid effort is in addition to the $5 million humanitarian assistance already pledged by the Canadian government to support relief operations.
