Canadian midfielder Nathan Saliba expressed his excitement about his recent move to La Liga side Villarreal, emphasizing that it brings him one step closer to fulfilling his ambition of competing in the prestigious Champions League. Saliba was officially presented by Villarreal at a press event on Wednesday, having signed a contract that extends until 2031.
Hailing from Longueuil, Quebec, Saliba is set to join forces with fellow Canadians Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi at Villarreal, a prominent club in Spanish football’s top division. Reflecting on his journey, Saliba remarked, “Playing in a top European league holds significant meaning for me. It validates the hard work and dedication I have put into my development.” He also expressed his eagerness to play in the Champions League, a dream shared by many players, signaling that this move marks a pivotal moment in his career.
Saliba shared that he received positive feedback about his new club and city from his Canadian compatriots. “They provided me with valuable insights about the team, the city, and the club’s culture and expectations,” he stated. “I was informed that Villarreal boasts a talented group of players who have a strong passion for playing football. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to immerse myself in this environment and learn more.”
Villarreal clinched third place in La Liga last season, securing a spot in the group stage of the upcoming 2026-27 Champions League, which commences next month. The club commenced the current La Liga season with two draws and is gearing up to take on Deportivo Alaves in their next fixture.
The 22-year-old Saliba makes the switch to Villarreal from Belgian outfit Anderlecht, where he featured twice this season. During his time with Anderlecht last season, Saliba registered three goals in 34 appearances in the Belgian Pro League. Prior to his European venture, Saliba amassed 78 appearances with Major League Soccer’s CF Montreal from 2023 to 2025, finding the net twice.
Saliba notably represented Canada at the recent World Cup, notably scoring a free-kick in his country’s 6-0 triumph over Qatar in Vancouver on June 18. Following this goal, he paid tribute to his injured teammate Ismael Kone by displaying Kone’s jersey, a gesture that resonated with fans as a poignant moment in the tournament.
