Marcus Ericsson secured victory at the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham through two critical maneuvers. Initially, Ericsson and teammate Will Power collided while Ericsson was executing a late-race maneuver. Subsequently, with just four laps remaining on the Markham street course, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean to claim the lead permanently, clinching his fifth win in the IndyCar series.
Ericsson attributed the win to the team’s exceptional pace, emphasizing their strategic gameplay and timely execution. Grosjean finished second, marking his first top-five finish of the season, while Power secured the third spot. Meanwhile, Alex Palou, the current leader in driver rankings, finished fourth.
The Andretti Global team, comprising Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second position in the driver rankings, collaborated to target Palou after Kirkwood’s crash on the 53rd lap. Team principal Ron Ruzewski highlighted the importance of minimizing Palou’s points to keep Kirkwood in contention for the IndyCar title.
Despite some miscommunications leading to a brief clash between Power and Ericsson during the race, the team managed to stay focused on their strategy. Palou earned 32 points, extending his lead over Kirkwood to 133 points in the standings.
Grosjean, who was defending against Palou for a significant portion of the race, eventually succumbed to Ericsson due to fuel and tire wear issues. Ericsson acknowledged the challenges of overtaking Grosjean on the tight course but capitalized on his advantages to make the decisive move.
The race saw multiple incidents, with six caution periods and several cars forced off the track due to collisions. Markham hosted its first-ever IndyCar event this year, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after a long history. Despite initial challenges with track completion, the event received positive feedback from drivers and fans alike.
Louis Foster, the fastest in practice and qualifying, encountered an early crash, validating his pre-race prediction of chaotic racing on the challenging Markham circuit. Despite the intense competition and multiple setbacks, Ericsson expressed optimism for future races at the venue, anticipating smoother operations in the upcoming editions.
