The Danube River is revealing Nazi German warships sunk during World War II as water levels drop due to the scorching heat and drought in Europe this summer. The recent heatwave in western Europe, the fifth since May, is expected to bring temperatures close to 40°C in Spain, France, and Italy. The Copernicus climate monitoring service confirmed that June and July were the hottest months on record in western Europe, resulting in an estimated 25,000 heat-related deaths.
The extreme heat has led to devastating wildfires and decreased water levels in major rivers like the Danube to record lows. Climate scientists warn that these events are clear indications of the worsening impact of fossil fuel-driven climate change on heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, agriculture, shipping, and energy systems across Europe.
Historians estimate that up to 200 Nazi warships were scuttled near Prahovo, Serbia, in 1944, with some of these wrecks now visible due to the low water levels. Other discoveries in the Danube include a German military motorcycle in Hungary, an unexploded British bomb in Slovakia, and possible ancient mammoth remains in Bulgaria.
Countries along the Danube are facing urgent concerns due to the low water levels. Governments have imposed restrictions on water use for irrigation and taken measures to ensure the operation of nuclear power plants. The drying river has prompted actions like redirecting water flow and curbing power use to prevent energy shortages.
