Simone Abrahamsohn, residing in Toronto, shares a personal journey of newfound responsibilities following the loss of her mother this summer. Taking on the role of primary caregiver for her brother Stuart, who is neurodivergent like herself, presents its challenges. Stuart, an autistic individual and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities due to his physical and emotional needs. Simone reflects on their shared experiences as siblings, acknowledging the impact of societal perceptions on their lives.
Growing up, Simone struggled with accepting her brother’s differences, feeling embarrassed by his behaviors, and societal misunderstandings of neurodivergence. Despite their unique challenges, Simone and Stuart share a deep connection, with Simone learning to navigate her own neurodivergent traits, such as ADHD, while supporting Stuart. The siblings’ living arrangement requires understanding and compromise to create a harmonious environment for both.
Simone emphasizes the importance of advocacy and acceptance, recounting past experiences where Stuart faced difficulties due to his autism. Now, as roommates, she strives to communicate effectively with Stuart, respecting his autonomy and involving him in decision-making processes. Adjusting her lifestyle to prioritize their relationship, Simone finds fulfillment in supporting Stuart and fostering a positive living dynamic for both siblings.
While sacrifices have been made, such as forgoing personal pursuits to prioritize Stuart’s care, Simone cherishes the opportunity to strengthen their bond and provide a supportive environment for her brother. Through resilience and dedication, she aims to redefine their sibling dynamic and create a nurturing space for their unique needs and experiences.
