Envoi Allen tragically passed away following his participation in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The veterinary team rushed to his aid when he collapsed on his way back to the stables after the race.
This marks the third fatality of this year’s Festival, with Hansard and HMS Seahorse also losing their lives, although due to falls rather than collapse.
Cheveley Park Stud, the horse’s owners, had announced before the race that this would be the 12-year-old Envoi Allen’s final appearance before retirement. He finished in ninth place as the oldest contender, just behind The Jukebox Man owned by Harry Redknapp. Gaelic Warrior emerged victorious in the Gold Cup, triumphing by eight lengths as the joint-favorite.
A spokesperson for Cheltenham Racecourse expressed deep sorrow over Envoi Allen’s sudden demise, describing him as an exceptionally talented horse and extending condolences to all associated with him.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Saint Le Fort also lost his life after a fall in the final race of the Festival, bringing the total horse fatalities during the 2026 edition to four.
Envoi Allen’s jockey, Darragh O’Keeffe, shared his shock and sadness, recalling the horse’s sudden collapse moments after the race. Richard Thompson of Cheveley Park Stud lamented the unexpected end to Envoi Allen’s illustrious career, emphasizing his contributions and the emotional loss felt by all involved.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton and commentator John Hunt paid tribute to Envoi Allen’s remarkable career and loyal fan base.
Despite the meticulous pre-race checks and post-race assessments, Envoi Allen’s fatal collapse was swift and unforeseen. The British Horseracing Authority will conduct a post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause.
Envoi Allen, a celebrated champion with 17 victories and over £1 million in prize money, left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
