Labour Official Urges Starmer to Condemn Trump’s Venezuela Actions

A top Labour official has cautioned that Keir Starmer needs to be more explicit about Donald Trump violating international laws in relation to Venezuela, stating the potential consequences could lead to disorder.

Dame Emily Thornberry, head of the influential foreign affairs select committee, emphasized the importance of not turning a blind eye to the situation. US forces apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse Cilia Flores over the weekend, alleging Maduro’s involvement in drug-related terrorism.

Minister Mike Tapp mentioned on Monday that it is the responsibility of the US to present the legal justification for their actions. He also refrained from commenting on whether the UK would denounce a potential invasion of Greenland.

Expressing her disapproval of US intervention in Venezuela, Dame Emily highlighted the need for caution in handling such matters. She stressed the significance of adhering to established international norms and avoiding actions that could disrupt global order.

The aftermath of the recent events in Venezuela remains uncertain, with Dame Emily underscoring the necessity for thorough planning and adherence to legal frameworks. She emphasized the pivotal role of upholding international law to prevent setting unfavorable precedents for other nations.

She urged the UK government to take a firmer stance on the breach of international laws, emphasizing the need for clear condemnation of unauthorized actions.

In response to inquiries about the US operation, Home Office Minister Mr. Tapp justified the actions by pointing out the alleged oppressive and criminal nature of Maduro’s regime. He indicated that the legality of the US actions would be assessed by the UK and its allies.

Regarding the motives behind the US operation, Mr. Tapp deferred to Donald Trump’s statements on the issue, particularly related to narco-terrorism concerns. When asked about potential economic interests in Venezuela’s oil reserves, he maintained that such details were not within the UK government’s purview, emphasizing the US’s responsibility to justify their actions legally.
