“Prisoner Convicted of Murder and Drug Trafficking Dies in Custody”

A man convicted of killing a grandfather and later engaging in drug trafficking while in prison has passed away while serving his sentence. David Smith, aged 45, fatally assaulted Steven Youll, also 45, in Newcastle in 2013 following a disagreement. Smith, along with accomplice Michael Wait, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years. Smith died due to multiple drug toxicity on February 8, 2024, at HMP Northumberland.

After Smith’s death, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) conducted an investigation that concluded Smith received appropriate clinical care while in prison. However, the report highlighted several concerns, as reported by Chronicle Live.

Despite Smith denying drug or alcohol issues, post-mortem tests revealed the presence of unapproved substances in his system. His underlying heart conditions, including ischaemic heart disease, also played a role in his demise. While prison authorities had care plans in place, lapses in monitoring occurred.

The PPO report disclosed that HMP Northumberland has implemented measures to combat drug issues, such as enhanced security protocols and increased collaboration with law enforcement. Smith, described as respected within the prison, was linked to drug and mobile phone trafficking activities through his various roles.

Intelligence reports indicated Smith’s involvement in a drug network within the prison. Despite challenges in verifying all claims, the prevalence of drug-related incidents among inmates supported the allegations. It was also suggested that Smith and another prisoner were involved in introducing a potent new drug strain to others, resulting in severe health consequences.

The report further detailed instances of drug smuggling and improper handling of substances within the prison. Smith’s engagement in illicit activities, including the use of codes and pictures to acquire contraband, posed significant security risks.

Following Smith’s death, prison officials were reminded of the importance of conducting welfare checks on inmates. The PPO recommended enhancing security checks for positions of trust within the prison to prevent similar incidents.

The most recent inspection of HMP Northumberland highlighted improvements in safety and respect within the facility. Efforts to reduce drug-related issues were noted, including enhanced gate security and the appointment of a drug strategy manager.

An HMP Northumberland spokesperson expressed condolences to Smith’s family and confirmed their cooperation with the investigation’s recommendations. They emphasized the implementation of corrective actions based on the report’s findings.
