Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the league standings, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a score of 4-3 in a Northern Super League match held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
In the 15th minute, Kahli Johnson scored the opening goal, putting the hosts in a 1-0 lead, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 approximately 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized the score to 2-2 in the first-half stoppage time.
Just before the halftime whistle, Thurton secured her second goal of the game, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris scored on a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now hold a record of 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. This defeat ended Ottawa’s 10-match unbeaten streak.
Despite Ottawa controlling 54% of the possession, they were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to Ottawa’s 6). The Wild secured six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then netted a second goal five minutes into the second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes gave the fourth-place Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the visitors 18-13, including 6 shots on target to Halifax’s 4. The Tides earned four of the six corners in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
