The labor union representing 4,400 WestJet flight attendants has officially given a 72-hour notice of a potential strike, which could impact summer travel plans. The Canadian Union of Public Employees has highlighted significant disparities in key negotiation points between the two parties. Chair of the union’s WestJet division, Alia Hussain, emphasized the necessity for equitable changes and expressed ongoing efforts to secure a fair agreement.
WestJet, in response, has initiated a 72-hour lockout notice following the union’s strike warning. Despite the looming possibility of a strike, the airline is actively engaged in negotiations to reach a resolution. WestJet’s CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, conveyed regret over the disruption caused to passengers and assured efforts to maintain operational integrity and minimize disruptions.
If a deal is not reached soon, potential job action could commence early Sunday morning. WestJet has made provisions for affected passengers, allowing flexibility in travel plans between July 30 and Aug. 4. Flights operated under WestJet Encore or code-sharing arrangements will remain unaffected by the potential strike.
The union’s concerns primarily revolve around unpaid ground duties, while WestJet contends that all tasks are compensated through a credit hour system. Both sides have also established protocols to manage flight disruptions and ensure the safe return of cabin crew in the event of a work stoppage. Aviation experts predict substantial financial losses for WestJet in the event of a strike, given the airline’s extensive daily flight operations and passenger volume during peak travel seasons.
