Waymo Braces for Winter: Toronto Expansion Challenge

Waymo is set to expand its operations to Toronto, facing the challenge of navigating snowy roads, a hurdle that will require time and extensive training data to conquer.

The American company announced its intention to commence testing on Toronto streets with human drivers at the helm in the coming days to conduct mapping and safety validations. Waymo aims to enable riders to hail driverless cabs by 2028 in the city.

These tests will run round the clock on all days of the week to ensure the technology can adapt to Toronto’s unique driving conditions, particularly winter challenges. Steven Waslander, Director of the University of Toronto’s Robotics Institute, highlighted the significance of Toronto’s winter conditions as a major differentiator from other cities where Waymo operates.

Waymo initially launched in warmer cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix but faces new complexities with snow-covered environments. Adverse weather conditions, such as snowfall, pose challenges for the cameras, radar, and lidar systems crucial for autonomous driving.

Experts emphasize the need for more data collection in snowy regions to enhance the system’s capabilities. Waymo utilizes various strategies, including heaters and windshield wipers for camera maintenance, to tackle weather-related obstacles.

While Waymo continues to enhance its technology for winter conditions, its planned deployment of ride-hailing services in Toronto by 2028 allows for ample time to address and resolve winter-related issues effectively.
