Virgin Media has released valuable tips for maintaining optimal internet speeds throughout the year. While it is common knowledge that positioning your router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal interference from objects like fish tanks can enhance performance, lesser-known factors like weather changes can also impact connectivity.
As temperatures increase in late spring and summer, routers can face additional strain, emphasizing the need to keep them in cool, well-ventilated areas.
Virgin Media highlighted the effects of warmer weather on broadband speeds, explaining, “Elevated temperatures can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.
“While outdoor equipment is built to withstand high temperatures, indoor routers may struggle in excessive heat conditions.
“Routers require sufficient airflow for optimal operation. If your Hub is obstructed behind a TV, enclosed in a cupboard, positioned near a heater, or exposed to direct sunlight, heat accumulation, particularly during a heatwave, can lead to slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic reboots for cooling purposes.”
Therefore, during warm weather, it is essential to relocate your router to a cooler place. While high temperatures can impact connectivity, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt your online activities.
Virgin Media advised, “Most broadband issues perceived as weather-related actually originate within the home.
“Factors like thick walls, excessive connected devices, and improper Hub placement typically have a more significant daily impact on your connection than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, consider positioning your Hub in a central, unobstructed location away from direct sunlight.
Virgin Media also suggested avoiding large metal objects and ensuring the router is not concealed behind furniture.
After severe weather conditions, it is important to inspect your cables. The company recommended, “Following storms or strong winds, verify that cables are secure and undamaged.”
Lastly, reduce interference by limiting the number of simultaneously connected devices for improved performance.
