The UK’s safeguarding minister has urged law enforcement to actively pursue individuals utilizing Elon Musk’s Grok technology to produce harmful deepfake images involving children.
Speaking to The Mirror, Jess Phillips expressed her frustration with X, the tech mogul’s platform, for evading responsibility amidst growing outrage over the issue. Grok, an artificial intelligence tool by X, has faced criticism for generating explicit images of individuals, including minors, without their consent.
Phillips emphasized the destructive impact of such actions and condemned the existence of features that facilitate such offenses. She insisted that law enforcement should vigorously investigate and prosecute those involved in creating or circulating such reprehensible content, with potential penalties of up to 10 years in prison for offenders.
Regarding X’s recent decision to restrict the deepfake image creation tool to paying users, Phillips dismissed it as insufficient. She demanded that X cease justifying its actions and collaborate with regulators to uphold legal standards. Phillips underscored the severe consequences of this abuse, particularly affecting women and girls.
Phillips emphasized the legal obligation of social media platforms to promptly remove such content, warning of substantial fines from the regulator Ofcom for non-compliance. She stressed the government’s expectation for Ofcom to enforce these regulations without hesitation, considering child sexual abuse as a heinous crime with lasting traumatic effects on victims.
Celebrities like Maya Jama have joined the call for platforms to cease generating unauthorized images of individuals. Proposed legislation aims to criminalize the creation, possession, and dissemination of harmful AI-generated images, potentially resulting in up to five years of imprisonment.
Furthermore, Labour’s strategy against violence towards women and girls commits the UK to outlaw apps that facilitate the creation of non-consensual deepfake images.
Phillips highlighted government efforts to criminalize the creation of intimate deepfake images without consent, stressing the Ministry of Justice’s urgent action to enforce these laws. She called upon X and other platforms to take responsibility and act decisively to address the issue.
Recent concerns raised by Ofcom regarding Grok’s creation of sexualized images involving children prompted urgent communication with Musk’s X and xAI. Musk acknowledged the lapses in safeguards and vowed to rectify them promptly, emphasizing that child sexual abuse material is strictly prohibited.
Musk affirmed that individuals misusing Grok for illegal purposes would face consequences equivalent to uploading illicit content, reaffirming a commitment to combatting such abuses.
