The Canadian government has not yet responded to Trump’s statements, despite his previous assertions of wanting Canada to join the United States as the 51st state. Following unsuccessful trade talks, a 50% tariff on various Canadian products was put into effect.
Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canadian negotiators withdrew from the talks due to unreasonable demands from the Trump administration, including restrictions on Canada’s trade agreements with other nations. Carney announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, mirroring the imposed tariffs. The new U.S. policy enforces a 50% tariff on goods worth over $28 billion, covering a wide range of products.
