A triathlete’s body has been found on a secluded beach after witnesses reported seeing a shark carrying a body in its mouth.
Erica Fox, aged 55, disappeared from Pacific Grove, near Monterey, California, last week after a suspected shark attack. She was swimming with the Kelp Krawlers, a group of ocean enthusiasts who gather at Lovers Point Beach every Sunday morning.
According to the US Coast Guard, a witness who reported a shark sighting following Fox’s disappearance observed the shark with a human body in its mouth.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office revealed that two shark sightings were reported when Fox went missing, indicating a possible shark encounter at Lovers Point. The county stated that “Two witnesses suggested the swimmer may have encountered a shark near Lovers Point.”
Petty Officer Christopher Sappey informed SFGate that one witness saw a shark emerging from the water with a body in its mouth.
Commander Brian Anderson of Pacific Grove Police mentioned that after the group came ashore following the initial reports, they realized Fox was missing.
Subsequently, a spokesperson from Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office confirmed finding Fox’s body in close proximity to a recent shark attack victim. The recovery operation involved collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies.
The body was retrieved over a mile away from the spot where Fox was swimming, at a remote beach in Wilder Ranch, more than a week after her disappearance.
Following a comprehensive search effort involving various agencies and resources, Fox’s husband, Jean-Francis Vanreusel, organized a memorial procession along the coast in honor of his late wife.
Vanreusel paid tribute to Fox, emphasizing her courage and love for life. Her father and friend also remembered her as an empathetic individual deeply connected to the ocean.
