Authorities have officially reported the passing of a third individual at the Burning Man festival, following the recent announcement of two other fatalities during the yearly gathering in the Nevada desert. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office disclosed that Armando Ramirez from Truckee, California, succumbed while en route to a hospital in Reno, located approximately 190 kilometers south of the festival. The 51-year-old was declared deceased in the ambulance during the early hours of Friday. The cause and circumstances of the death are pending further testing, with no suspicions of foul play indicated.
The festival, known for its focus on art displays and self-expression, acknowledged two additional deaths last week, which were confirmed by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. Craigh Mann, aged 60, was discovered deceased on Saturday around 3 p.m. local time in a trailer he shared with his partner. Another attendee, identified as Sampson Tshombe, a man in his mid-50s, passed away after a medical emergency at the festival’s temporary medical facility on Thursday.
Sheriff’s officials stated that foul play was not evident in the deaths of Mann and Tshombe. However, both individuals will undergo postmortem examinations and toxicology screenings, with results expected in six to eight weeks. This year commemorates the 40th anniversary of the festival, which commenced on August 30 and concluded on Monday. Each year, a multitude of individuals converge in the desert to camp and engage in unconventional performances, culminating in the ceremonial burning of a large wooden effigy resembling a man.
Tragically, the festival has experienced fatalities in the past. Since its relocation from Baker Beach in San Francisco to the Black Rock Desert in 1990, over seven deaths have been reported at the event. Pershing County Sheriff and Coroner Jerry Allen mentioned in a statement that on average, one death occurs annually at the festival, according to NBC News.
