“Skate Canada High-Performance Director Mike Slipchuk to Depart After 20-Year Tenure”

Skate Canada made an announcement on Wednesday regarding the departure of Mike Slipchuk as high-performance director by the end of the 2026-27 season, capping off his 20-year tenure in the position. Slipchuk became a part of Skate Canada in 2006, overseeing a period during which Canadian figure skaters achieved 10 Olympic medals and 24 world championship medals.

Notably, Canada secured four Olympic medals under Slipchuk’s guidance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, with gold medals claimed by ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and the team event skaters. Virtue and Moir’s gold medals made them the most successful Olympic figure skaters in history, with three gold and two silver medals to their names.

While recent Olympic campaigns have seen Canada experience a downturn in medal success, with no podium finishes in Beijing 2022 and only one bronze medal won by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance at the Milan Cortina Games earlier this year. Over the past two decades, Canada has seen its athletes crowned world champions in various disciplines, including Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013 and the three gold medals by Virtue and Moir.

The latest Canadian pair to achieve world championship status were Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024. Following his resignation, Slipchuk will continue to support Skate Canada in an advisory capacity to ensure a smooth transition for the incoming high-performance director.

Reflecting on his time with Skate Canada, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the high-performance program and work alongside exceptional athletes and coaches. He highlighted the profound impact of witnessing Canadian athletes standing on the podium adorned with their medals and the national flag, moments he will forever cherish.
