In Northern British Columbia, four distinctive roadside attractions spanning four different centuries have been selected as the region’s top contenders in the Search for B.C.’s Best Roadside Attraction. These landmarks showcase the rich history and evolution of the province.
In the 18th century, the eruption of a volcano in the Nass Valley led to the creation of lava beds in Nisga’a territory along Highway 113. This event, which resulted in significant loss of life, forever altered the landscape and culture of the region. Justina Moore, an education and programs director at the Nisga’a Museum, highlighted the site’s historical and cultural significance, blending Western science with Indigenous oral traditions.
Moving to the 19th century, the influx of gold miners in search of fortune transformed an area near Quesnel, with one of the largest gold strikes attributed to Englishman Billy Barker. At the Barkerville Historic Town, visitors can step back in time and experience the essence of the gold rush era, integral to the early settlement history of British Columbia.
In the 20th century, Prince George became synonymous with the forestry industry, with the city’s iconic Mr. PG statue welcoming visitors. Claire Thwaites, the city’s communications manager, described Mr. PG as a beloved mascot and symbol of the community, embodying a friendly and welcoming persona.
Looking ahead to the 21st century, resource towns like Tumbler Ridge are diversifying their economies and attracting tourists with natural wonders. Manda Maggs, executive director of the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark, credited the region’s resource industry for enabling the development of a thriving tourism sector, anchored by a vast network of hiking trails.
These four stories encapsulate the past, present, and future aspirations of British Columbia. As the competition progresses, only two of these attractions will advance to the next round.
