Russian airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and left several others wounded in Kyiv and its adjoining areas early on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine saw a significant escalation in air assaults in the recent months due to Russia’s slowed progress on the battlefield.
In the past five days, Kyiv and its vicinity have been plagued by swarms of advanced drones equipped with jet engines, causing casualties, property damage, and disruption to the daily lives of residents. The relentless round-the-clock attacks have led to lengthy air-raid alerts, affecting millions of people in the region.
The situation worsened on Tuesday morning, with more explosions reported in the capital. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted that Russian drones and ballistic missiles targeted residential areas and railway infrastructure during the intense overnight assaults. Sybiha urged Ukraine’s allies to ramp up economic pressure on Russia and explore options to utilize Russia’s frozen assets abroad to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.
The overnight attacks resulted in the loss of eight lives in Kyiv, mainly railway workers, with additional casualties reported on Tuesday morning following a drone strike that caused a fire at a high-rise apartment building. In Boryspil, located near Kyiv, four individuals lost their lives, and 13 others sustained injuries in an attack targeting a residential structure and other sites. Among the casualties outside Kyiv was an Indian citizen.
The airstrikes also extended to a border crossing with Romania in Odesa, impacting thousands of families who were left without electricity, as reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The ongoing conflict has disrupted life in the Ukrainian capital, with Russia utilizing over 2,800 jet-powered drones in August alone, significantly increasing their deployment compared to previous months.
Ukraine retaliated by targeting Russian facilities, including oil refineries and logistics infrastructure, causing damage in regions like Ust-Luga and Samara. As the conflict intensifies, support for Ukraine’s air defense capabilities becomes crucial, especially in light of incidents like drones briefly entering Estonian airspace during a strike against Russia.
Peace talks led by the U.S. have hit a standstill this year, with Ukraine rejecting Russian territorial demands and the U.S. shifting focus to other global conflicts. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy indicated progress in discussions with U.S. envoys, aiming to finalize plans for an official visit to Ukraine.
The ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for diplomatic solutions and international support to mitigate the escalating conflict in the region.
