Reform UK is under scrutiny for its handling of road maintenance issues as recent analysis revealed that Councils led by the party had the lowest effectiveness in repairing potholes. The Government has introduced a new system to address potholes, with a significant number of Reform-led Local Highway Authorities receiving a ‘Red’ rating, indicating poor performance. The Department for Transport has implemented a mapping tool to assess 154 local highway authorities based on road conditions and funding utilization.
Among the Reform Councils, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and West Northamptonshire were rated ‘Red’ out of the twelve Councils governed by Reform. Similarly, Conservative Councils were also found to be struggling in addressing pothole issues, with nearly 20% of their Councils receiving a ‘Red’ rating. Anna Turley MP, Chair of the Labour Party, criticized Reform Councils for their poor track record in fixing potholes, emphasizing the Labour Party’s commitment to investing in road maintenance and addressing the pothole problem.
The data was gathered before Reform took control of the local authorities, with authorities such as Cumberland, Cumbria; Bolton, Greater Manchester; Leicestershire; Suffolk; and Kensington and Chelsea identified as ‘Red’ areas. The DfT announced a support program for ‘Red’ authorities to enhance their practices. On the other hand, authorities like Essex, Wiltshire, Coventry, Leeds, and Darlington were classified as ‘Green,’ signifying better performance in road maintenance.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the Government’s increased funding for local road maintenance, aiming to alleviate the burden on drivers caused by poor road conditions. A Reform UK spokesperson defended the party’s efforts in improving highways services, particularly in addressing the pothole backlog inherited from previous administrations. They cited progress in Derbyshire as an example of their commitment to enhancing road infrastructure.
The Government’s substantial investment in road maintenance aims to reduce repair costs for drivers, enhance road safety, and improve community infrastructure.
