“Outrage over ICE Shooting Sparks New Congressional Visit Rule”

The US government quietly implemented a new rule to safeguard ICE shortly after an agent shot Renee Good multiple times in the head. Shocking video footage of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross fatally shooting the 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis has sparked outrage domestically and internationally. The Trump administration has vocally supported the agent’s actions, labeling the victim as a “domestic terrorist” and the incident as a “tragedy of her own making.”

In a less publicized move, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem introduced a measure requiring lawmakers to provide a week’s notice before visiting ICE facilities. This new policy enforces a seven-day advance notice period, restricting impromptu or last-minute congressional visits. The timing of this change, announced on Saturday but implemented on Thursday, coincided with the fatal shooting of Ms. Good.

The restriction on congressional visits to ICE facilities came to light when three House Democrats, Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig, and Kelly Morrison, were barred from entering an ICE detention center in Minnesota. The representatives were unaware of the new rule when attempting to visit the site. Representative Omar emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that the public should be informed about activities in ICE facilities.

Following the incident, a Homeland Security spokesperson accused the congress members of leading protestors to the immigration center with the intention of targeting ICE officers. The spokesperson cited safety concerns for detainees and staff, emphasizing compliance with existing court orders and policies that mandate a seven-day notification period for congressional visits.

The controversy surrounding the shooting escalated when bodycam footage from agent Ross contradicted claims that the victim had attempted to run over the officer. The footage captured Ms. Good calmly addressing the officer before being shot, while Ross was heard using derogatory language after the shooting.

This latest development comes amid heightened scrutiny of ICE activities and calls for transparency and accountability within the agency.
