Conservationist Mark Thomas recently discussed the remarkable breeding success of a male Montagu’s harrier in the United Kingdom. This particular bird, known as AU, has played a crucial role in bolstering the dwindling British population of his species by fathering 16 offspring, with 10 born in the last two years alone.
Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe, including the UK, and spend their winters in Africa and parts of Asia. The global population of these birds has been declining, with the species categorized as of least concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.
In the UK, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has been actively working to protect the Montagu’s harrier population, which has faced significant declines over the years. Thanks to AU’s successful breeding efforts, this year has been particularly successful for the species in the country.
AU’s acrobatic mating displays have attracted several females, resulting in successful nesting and the birth of six chicks. Conservationists are hopeful that AU’s offspring, especially his sons, will contribute to the species’ recovery in the UK. To safeguard the new hatchlings, the nests have been strategically located on a British farm, with protective barriers in place to shield them from predators.
In a new approach, the RSPB has equipped two juvenile harriers with satellite trackers to monitor their movements and migration patterns. This tracking initiative will provide valuable insights into the birds’ behaviors and help conservationists ensure their safety and well-being in the future.
