In a surprising turn of events, a large African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered meandering slowly along the outskirts of a vast wetland in Manitoba’s Interlake region, far from her native Sahara desert habitat. Staff at Oak Hammock Marsh were taken aback by the unexpected appearance of the 36-kilogram tortoise in their midst.
Initially dismissing reports of tortoise sightings as likely mistaken observations of a local snapping turtle, the staff were prompted to investigate further when a sighting was logged on the iNaturalist app. A quick search led them to Molly, who was found in the marsh’s parking lot, a considerable distance from where she belonged.
Upon her rescue, Molly was showered with care and attention by Oak Hammock staff, who fed her cucumbers and flower petals and provided guided tours of the facility. Eventually, the tortoise’s family was located through social media, and Molly was joyfully reunited with her owners.
It was revealed that Molly had been a cherished pet for 15 years, raised by her family since she was a hatchling. The tortoise’s escapade to the marsh remains a mystery, with theories ranging from a well-intentioned individual relocating her to a belief that she traversed the 20-kilometer distance on her own.
Despite the puzzling circumstances of her journey, Molly’s safe return home brought a sense of relief and amusement to all involved at Oak Hammock Marsh.
