The Israeli government is issuing a warning to intensify “targeted strikes” in Gaza unless Hamas takes steps to prevent the launching of kites by Palestinians, including children, towards Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on social media platform X, disclosed that he and Defence Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” on Sunday evening to address the issue of drones, balloons, and kites being launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting was attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the National Security Council, and senior Israel Defence Forces (IDF) officials.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel has cautioned Hamas that if the launches do not cease immediately, the IDF will escalate targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and evacuate civilians from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons. He asserted that Israel will not tolerate threats to its communities by Hamas or any other group in Gaza.
Meanwhile, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa, flying kites in Khan Younis provides a temporary escape amidst the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Omar expressed that flying kites brings a sense of joy as there are limited sources of happiness in Gaza. Despite Netanyahu’s warnings, he clarified that they are children who do not engage in violent activities and simply wish to live in peace.
Preceding the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on southern Israel, Israel reported incidents of burning kites and balloons sent from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recent discoveries of kites near a kibbutz close to Gaza revealed no weapons or hazardous materials attached to them.
Netanyahu’s latest stance coincides with Israeli military actions that resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals, including two children, following a request from a U.S. delegation to reduce attacks. The strikes targeted various locations including refugee camps and resulted in casualties, adding to the toll of the ongoing conflict.
Hamas, in a message on the Telegram platform, criticized Netanyahu’s remarks on children flying kites as indicative of a continued agenda of aggression and displacement. The group condemned Israel’s actions as brutal crimes against Palestinians and called for international condemnation and adherence to a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Concerns have risen among Gaza residents, including Omar and his mother Yasmin Halawa, regarding potential bans on children’s activities due to security concerns raised by Israel. Despite the uncertainties, the children persisted in flying kites near their tents as the day drew to a close.
