Another intense controversy involving ICE has arisen in the United States, with allegations that agents detained a five-year-old boy and used him as bait to apprehend his relatives. The Columbia Heights Public School district revealed that four students were taken into custody by federal agents in separate immigration raids within the last two weeks.
Among the detained children is a five-year-old boy who is a student at a local elementary school. It is claimed that the child was utilized to lure his family members out of their residence. This incident has added to the mounting opposition against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities following a recent fatal shooting involving a 37-year-old woman.
The superintendent of Columbia Heights, Zena Stenvik, expressed bewilderment over the detention of the young child, questioning the necessity of such actions. The boy, named Liam Conejo Ramos, was reportedly stopped by masked agents in his driveway upon returning home from school with his father. Subsequently, the child was directed to knock on the door to check for other occupants in the house, effectively being used as a lure.
Following the incident, both the child and his father were taken to Texas by the agents. Liam’s family is said to have an active asylum case with no deportation orders. The school staff visited the family later to offer support, especially to a middle school student who discovered that his father and brother had also been apprehended.
A legal representative for Ramos’ family indicated that the exact whereabouts of Liam and his father remain unknown, but they are likely held in a family detention facility in Texas based on similar cases. District officials disclosed that three more students under 18 years old were also detained by federal agents recently.
One of the cases involved a 10-year-old student who was taken into custody alongside her mother while en route to school. The child managed to inform her father about the situation before being detained and subsequently taken to a detention center in Texas. Additionally, another student was apprehended on the way to school, and a 17-year-old student was detained after ICE agents forcibly entered their residence.
The superintendent expressed deep concern over the impact of these incidents on the community, with many students too frightened to attend school due to the fear of raids. The heightened enforcement activities have drastically altered the daily lives of residents, with children witnessing distressing scenes on their way to and from school.
The use of masked and armed agents to detain children and their families has raised significant questions about the current state of affairs in the country. The community is left grappling with a sense of shattered safety and uncertainty about what the future holds.
