Following the withdrawal of Nira Dookeran from the Green Party of Canada leadership race, only one candidate remains in the running.
Mike Morrice, a former MP from Kitchener, Ontario, is now the sole contender for the leadership position.
Dookeran cited personal and family reasons for her decision to step back from the race, expressing her well wishes to Morrice and acknowledging the talent and dedication within the party.
The Green Party of Canada expressed gratitude towards Dookeran for her participation and commitment to the leadership race.
In response, Morrice thanked Dookeran and reiterated the importance of their campaign in advancing the party’s goals amidst pressing issues like the climate crisis.
The Green Party of Canada initiated its five-month leadership race on June 11.
Elizabeth May, the current Green Party Leader, announced her intention to step down in the summer of 2025, with plans to continue leading until November.
May, the sole Green MP in the House of Commons, first assumed leadership in 2006, later succeeded by Annamie Paul in 2020. May resumed co-leadership in 2022 alongside Jonathan Pedneault, who resigned in April 2025.
Dookeran, a former provincial Green candidate, withdrew from the current leadership race after serving in various roles within the Ontario Green Party for over a decade.
Morrice, who previously represented Kitchener Centre in Parliament, lost his seat in the April 2025 federal election but was appointed as the federal Greens’ deputy leader later that year.
