Television Centre was bustling with activity as the popular hosts of “Good Morning Britain,” Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway, bid an emotional farewell to the studio. The transition to a new location was marked by packed recycling bins and heartfelt goodbyes from presenters and crew members.
Emotions ran high during a gathering on Thursday morning, with tears flowing as they commemorated the end of an era for some of the top British TV shows. Kate was visibly moved, sitting on the studio floor while colleagues shared words. Susanna and weather presenter Laura Tobin stood together at the renowned GMB desk, visibly emotional as they prepared for the upcoming changes, with staff raising glasses in a toast to the team.
Christmas decorations were taken down by workers as the studios were prepared for the handover to new shows. “Good Morning Britain” will now be filmed at ITN headquarters in Central London, while other daytime shows will move to The H Club in Covent Garden.
ITV has announced significant changes following budget cuts, with a revamped schedule set to launch on Monday. “Good Morning Britain” will be extended by half an hour, while “Lorraine,” hosted by Lorraine Kelly, will be reduced by 30 minutes. “This Morning” and “Loose Women” will continue as usual, with “Loose Women” airing for only 30 weeks per year. The restructuring resulted in the loss of 220 jobs as part of cost-saving measures.
The upheaval was met with mixed reactions within the ITV team, with some expressing sadness over the changes. Janet Street Porter, known for her candid remarks, reflected on the adjustments, acknowledging the challenges but highlighting the potential for growth and resilience in the face of change.
The transformation at Television Centre was part of ITV’s strategic realignment, as announced by Kevin Lygo last August. The restructuring aims to streamline operations, enhance news coverage, and allocate resources to diverse programming genres while maintaining the network’s commitment to trusted journalism.
Despite the emotional farewells and adjustments, Television Centre will continue to host a variety of popular shows, ensuring that the iconic location remains a hub for entertainment and production in the TV industry.
