“Global Demand Surges for Canadair ‘Super Scooper’ Water Bombers”

As wildfires ravage Canada, the United States, and Europe, there is mounting pressure on the manufacturer of the Canadair “Super Scooper” water bombers to boost production. De Havilland, based in Calgary, has resumed Canadair production after acquiring the program from Bombardier in 2015.

These renowned firefighting aircraft are meticulously crafted by hand in Calgary using components from all over Canada. The revived production line, initiated in 2022, is progressing well, with the first two planes set to be finished and delivered by early 2028.

Amidst current shortages and aging fleets, Canadian premiers and European leaders are eager to secure these aircraft. The Canadair, designed in the 1960s specifically for fighting wildfires, is revered for its ability to swiftly scoop up water from various sources to combat blazes.

Pressure is mounting on De Havilland as the demand for Canadair water bombers surges globally. The company is contemplating expanding production to meet the high demand, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pushing for a firm order from Ottawa to kickstart a second production line.

With existing orders for 38 water bombers, De Havilland aims to produce up to 10 annually, potentially scaling up to 20 with a second line. However, delivery timelines for new orders extend to 2032-2033 due to the complexity of assembling the aircraft with mostly Canadian-made parts.

Experts warn that failure to meet the escalating demand may prompt other countries to develop competing firefighting aircraft, posing a threat to Canadian manufacturing jobs. A Senate report suggests establishing a national fleet of modern firefighting aircraft to bolster wildfire response efforts in Canada.

While aerial firefighting units play a crucial role in wildfire management, they are just one component alongside prevention and mitigation strategies. The federal government is committed to enhancing Canada’s wildfire response capabilities amid increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
