Global Concerns Rise Over Online Trade of Preserved Human Remains

A new study reveals a surprising global demand for preserved human remains in the online market, raising concerns about potential health risks associated with this niche hobby. The research, led by Kirsty Squires and her team from the University of Staffordshire, examined 128 online posts from 2015 to 2025 showcasing the sale of mummified remains, including heads, hands, and feet.

According to the study published in the International Journal of Cultural Property, mummified body parts can host dormant microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, which could pose health risks if mishandled. Improper storage conditions were found to be a leading cause of deterioration in these remains, potentially releasing harmful fungal spores and bacteria into the air when handled.

To mitigate these risks, proper protective equipment should be worn when handling mummified remains to prevent exposure to airborne microorganisms and toxic chemicals like arsenic and mercury. While the study did not report any specific cases of illness from handling such remains, historical incidents suggest potential dangers, including fatal outcomes from exposure to mould spores.

In Canada, the online trade of human remains is not closely regulated, with dealers easily accessible and shipping restrictions in place for mummified human remains by Canada Post, Purolator, and UPS. Despite concerns raised in the study, some experts emphasize ethical considerations over health hazards associated with this trade and advocate for potential bans on the online sale of human remains globally.

Efforts are being made to address these concerns, with calls for stricter regulations and prohibitions on the trade of human remains to prevent the commodification and appropriation of ancestral bodies. The push for legislative action, similar to the proposed ban in the U.K., highlights the need for increased awareness and regulations surrounding the online trade of human remains in various countries.
