George and Amal Clooney have officially announced their decision to depart from the United States after acquiring French citizenship. They are part of a growing trend of celebrities opting to leave America.
The couple, George aged 64 and Amal aged 47, tied the knot in 2014 and recently purchased a residence in Provence, France, where they may relocate. Reports confirm that following the holiday season, they, along with their eight-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, obtained French citizenship.
Various French media sources have validated these reports. George has previously expressed his admiration for France and the couple’s desire to move there to provide a better environment for raising their children.
In an interview with Esquire, the actor shared, “We are incredibly fortunate. … A significant part of my childhood was spent on a farm, which I detested as a child. However, now, for our kids, it’s different — they are not glued to their iPads, you know?”
He continued, “They have a much more enriching life. I was concerned about bringing up our children in LA., within the Hollywood culture. I feared they wouldn’t have a fair opportunity at life.”
“France—there, they are not overly concerned with fame. I don’t want them to constantly worry about paparazzi or be compared to other famous kids,” George added.
Additionally, George mentioned his efforts to learn French in preparation for the move. The couple reportedly resides near Brignoles, France, while also owning properties in Los Angeles, South Oxfordshire, England, Lake Como, Italy, and Los Cabos, Mexico.
Several other American celebrities have also chosen to relocate abroad in recent years. Former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her spouse, actress Portia de Rossi, moved to the Cotswolds in November 2024.
Comedian Rosie O’Donnell relocated to Ireland with her son, and Lily Collins made the move to Copenhagen in 2023. Pamela Anderson returned to her birthplace, Vancouver Island in Canada, after residing in the US, while Amber Heard moved to Madrid, Spain, post her legal battle with Johnny Depp.
Eva Longoria has been dividing her time between Spain and Mexico for work commitments. George and Amal’s forthcoming move follows the passing of George’s sister, Ada, at the age of 65, after her battle with cancer.
Paying tribute to his “hero” sister, Ada, known as Adelia Zeidler, George expressed to People magazine, “My sister, Ada, was my hero. She faced cancer with bravery and humor. I have never encountered anyone as courageous. Amal and I will deeply miss her.”
