Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw announced on Thursday that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming television series based on the “Harry Potter” franchise, citing her stance against supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on her Instagram, where she firmly rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO “Harry Potter” series.
Expressing her decision to stand against transphobia, Pankiw emphasized the ease of refusing to support such ideologies. Notably, she clarified that her refusal was for a directing role, not acting.
With an established career that includes directing episodes of “Black Mirror” and “Feel Good,” as well as the film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw’s stance reflects her principles. The exchange, dated April 21, did not disclose the identity of the person she was communicating with.
The highly anticipated series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is set to debut on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, streaming on Crave in Canada. Based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic book series, the show has sparked controversy due to the author’s contentious views on transgender issues.
Rowling’s public statements on gender and sex have divided opinions, leading to criticism and backlash. Her comments have also affected the “Harry Potter” franchise, with actors and industry figures distancing themselves from her beliefs. Notably, Canadian restaurant chain Tim Hortons faced backlash for its collaboration with the franchise.
Joining Pankiw in declining involvement in the series, director and writer Kate Herron shared her own experience of turning down offers to work on the show. Herron, known for her work on “Loki” and other popular series, voiced solidarity with Pankiw’s decision.
While representatives for Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, have not commented on the refusals, Pankiw’s representatives are yet to respond to requests for further details on the text exchange. The decisions by Pankiw and Herron underscore a growing trend of industry professionals taking a stand against ideologies conflicting with their values.
