Environment Canada has issued a weather alert indicating the potential for severe thunderstorms capable of spawning a tornado in eastern Alberta. The agency warned that funnel clouds in the area could descend to the ground and transform into brief landspout tornadoes. Reports have indicated that these funnel clouds are occurring at low altitudes. The risk of landspout tornadoes is expected to persist until early this evening.
In the event of a tornado or a tornado warning, Environment Canada advises individuals to seek shelter indoors on the lowest floor away from exterior walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell, or interior closet. Vulnerable structures like mobile homes, vehicles, and tents should be abandoned in favor of seeking refuge in sturdy buildings. If no shelter is available, lying in a low-lying area and safeguarding the head from potential debris is recommended.
The agency also issued a separate weather statement before noon, warning of possible funnel clouds in central and northern Alberta. Weak landspout tornadoes may form in these regions due to slight rotation beneath rapidly developing clouds or mild thunderstorms. Observers are urged to take any sighting of funnel clouds seriously and prepare to seek shelter promptly as these formations can materialize suddenly.
Although the weak rotation associated with funnel clouds is typically not hazardous near the ground, there is a chance that the rotation could intensify, resulting in a weak landspout tornado. While landspout tornadoes are usually not highly destructive, they can still pose risks by uprooting trees, causing roof damage, or propelling debris short distances. Environment Canada has cautioned that conditions conducive to funnel cloud formation will persist in central and northern Alberta until later today, with watches and warnings to be issued should the risk of landspout tornadoes escalate.
