The veteran voice behind Calgary Flames radio broadcasts, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher, who served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for over three decades, from 1980 until his retirement after the 2013-14 NHL season, was known for his iconic catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”
Maher’s contributions to the Flames’ success, including their Stanley Cup win in 1989 and their 2004 finals appearance, endeared him to fans in Calgary. The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, emphasizing his lasting impact on the team and the community.
Hailing from Campbellton, N.B., Maher previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games before joining the Flames in 1980. He was recognized for his exceptional broadcasting skills and dedication to his craft, earning a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
