AI’s influence on daily life is growing, posing challenges for parents to keep pace with the evolving landscape. Families are increasingly assisting their children in navigating a digital realm saturated with AI, evident in various aspects such as social media, academic tasks, and relationships. Ensuring online safety for kids in a world where discerning reality is complex is a pressing concern.
In collaboration with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, we aim to promote family discussions through The Family Chat initiative in 2026. The goal is to facilitate open and transparent dialogues at home about smartphone usage and online safety, aiming to alleviate the perceived complexity of the matter. Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys, will engage with parents and children to address pertinent issues they face.
Our initial family conversation delves into AI and emphasizes the significance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, offering valuable support for parents with children up to 18 years old. The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, Isaac, and Ruby, rely on digital devices for connectivity. However, the parents acknowledge their limited understanding of AI, which can be a drawback in ensuring safety.
Anna admits her challenge in identifying AI elements, often mistaking them for real content, while Joshua highlights the prevalence of realistic AI content on platforms like TikTok. As homework increasingly shifts online with AI-generated research, families like the Karleys and Giovanna are adapting to this new educational landscape.
Giovanna observes the shift to computer-based homework for her eldest at secondary school, stressing the importance of evaluating the use of AI in education continually. The focus is not on vilifying AI but on discerning its optimal application.
To guide children in safe AI usage, consider the following tips:
1. Collaborate on AI exploration as a family to make it engaging and secure.
2. Encourage fact-checking and critical thinking to address AI inaccuracies.
3. Respect age restrictions and privacy guidelines on AI platforms.
4. Foster discussions on distinguishing reality from misinformation online.
5. Utilize AI as a tool for inspiration rather than a shortcut, emphasizing creativity and problem-solving skills.
The Karleys appreciate having a reliable resource like Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for guidance. This platform offers accessible resources and toolkits for parents to discuss AI safety with their children, including age-specific guidance developed in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre. Engaging educational AI quizzes further encourage family involvement and dialogue on online safety.
While the Karley family actively discusses online safety, Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub has enhanced their efforts, enabling them to learn and support their children effectively.
