“Concerns Rise as Mayor Seeks Successor in Ontario”

James Brose, the current mayor of North Algona Wilberforce in eastern Ontario, is concerned about the lack of candidates stepping forward to run for mayor in the upcoming fall election. Brose, a retired 69-year-old farmer who has served as mayor for eight years, has decided not to seek re-election due to health reasons following a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery last year.

Despite the approaching deadline for nomination papers, no one in North Algona Wilberforce has yet announced their candidacy for mayor, with only seven candidates vying for the four council seats. Brose acknowledged the challenges of the mayor’s role, including a heavy workload and limited time for personal commitments like vacations.

Similar concerns have been echoed by candidates in other Ontario municipalities, with some areas seeing only the incumbent mayor or reeve filing for re-election. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario reported an increase in acclaimed council positions in recent years, signaling potential challenges for competitive elections.

In Arnprior, only five candidates had filed for the seven-member council as of Friday, with incumbent Coun. Dan Lynch expressing confidence that more candidates would file before the deadline. Both Brose and Lynch highlighted the modest financial compensation for municipal roles as a potential deterrent for younger residents to participate in local politics.

While Brose speculated that his successful tenure may be deterring potential successors, Lynch emphasized the importance of community satisfaction with current leadership. Despite the demanding nature of the roles, both men underscored the importance of passion and dedication to serving the community over financial incentives.
