The Toronto Blue Jays will honor longtime broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into their newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who concluded his broadcasting career earlier this year after announcing over 4,000 games, dedicated nearly four decades to the Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his gratitude, Martinez shared in an interview with CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning” on Friday that he never anticipated such recognition but considers it a tremendous honor. He credited Blue Jays fans for their warm reception over the years, making him feel like a part of their families.
Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez mentioned that these lines evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010, drawing inspiration from his time in Milwaukee and the influence of fellow broadcaster Bob Uecker.
Reflecting on his transition into retirement, Martinez revealed that it marked a significant change after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations as a broadcaster, health concerns, including a second battle with cancer in 2025 (following an initial diagnosis in 2022), led him to step away.
Gratefully announcing his cancer-free status and well-being, Martinez will join the Hall of Excellence, situated on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, which pays tribute to key figures who shaped the Blue Jays franchise. The exhibit will feature all 11 current members on the team’s Level of Excellence, including notable figures like Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.
Martinez reflected on his initial doubts upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, feeling like he was being “exiled” from his former teams, the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers. However, he soon realized the city’s passion for baseball and the team’s embrace, acknowledging Toronto as a special destination for players.
Recalling the excitement of past World Series, Martinez highlighted the memorable Game 7 and the chemistry of successful teams. Despite witnessing struggles, like Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s challenges during a tough season, Martinez emphasized the game’s inherent difficulty, even for elite players.
