“British Citizens Involved in Peru Train Collision”

The British Foreign Office has confirmed its assistance to multiple British citizens involved in a tragic train collision near Machu Picchu in Peru. The incident occurred when two trains carrying tourists to and from the ancient Incan citadel collided on December 30, resulting in one fatality, identified as a railroad worker, and over 30 injuries.

Following the crash, the railway temporarily halted services between Machu Picchu and Cuzco. The UK Foreign Office acknowledged the presence of British travelers in the collision and stated that they are in touch with local authorities to provide support.

The collision took place near Qoriwayrachina, an archaeological site, when a train returning from Machu Picchu collided with a train heading towards the location. The cause of the crash remains uncertain.

Local media footage depicted train carriages with damaged windows and sides stranded along the railway line. Machu Picchu attracts approximately 1.5 million visitors annually, with a recent increase in tourism by about 25% over the last ten years.

The region’s tourism industry has faced challenges due to political unrest and disagreements over site management, leading to occasional protests that obstruct access to the railway. Alternatively, visitors can trek to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo, a small town requiring approximately four days on foot.
