“Big Issue Founder Calls for UK ‘Ministry of Poverty’ “

Lord John Bird, the founder of the Big Issue, has emphasized his parliamentary goal of combating poverty in the UK. He expressed the need for a dedicated government department focused on eradicating poverty entirely, labeling it as the “ministry of poverty prevention and cure.”

Lord Bird, aged 79 and raised in a Notting Hill slum, highlighted the absence of a department solely dedicated to poverty eradication since the establishment of the welfare state post-Second World War. He criticized the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for not prioritizing long-term poverty alleviation strategies, instead likening it to an “emergency department.”

Addressing the need for concrete actions, Lord Bird reiterated the necessity for government-imposed targets to tackle child poverty effectively. He urged the government to establish legally binding objectives akin to those set forth in the net zero law to ensure progress in poverty reduction.

In his upcoming legislative endeavors, Lord Bird plans to push for amendments related to child welfare and education to hold the government accountable for poverty reduction efforts. He emphasized the importance of measuring the government’s performance through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess and enhance poverty alleviation initiatives.

Notably, Lord Bird clarified that his advocacy against poverty is driven by a profound commitment to dismantling the systemic issues that perpetuate poverty cycles. He stressed the urgency of securing concessions and support for vulnerable communities to improve their quality of life and opportunities.

Responding to Lord Bird’s remarks, a government spokesperson highlighted ongoing efforts to address poverty by increasing the national living wage and implementing measures to reduce energy costs for low-income households. The government aims to lift 550,000 children out of poverty by 2030 through comprehensive reforms and targeted interventions.
