Search teams have located the remains of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering team that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago, as confirmed by a mountaineering official and local authorities. Geis’s body was discovered by a group of local volunteers, according to Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s first endeavor to summit an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
A resident of San Antonio, Texas, Geis, aged 39, had revealed on social media earlier this year her decision to shutter her Pilates studio to embark on “a giant leap of faith into the unknown to see where life goes. I have a sneaking suspicion there will be lots of helmets, harnesses and crampons involved,” she shared. Her family paid tribute to her earlier this month, describing her as “a bright light who was loved deeply by her family and friends.”
The conclusion of the search, which commenced on July 31 following the tragic avalanche involving the team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja, has brought closure. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a Nepal-born ex-British Army soldier, gained fame for climbing the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record 189 days in 2019, a feat documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Notably, his record was surpassed in 2023.
Incidents like these are not uncommon during mountaineering expeditions in northern Pakistan due to hazards such as avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitudes, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
