German authorities are probing a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to intensify retaliation against countries aiding Ukraine.
In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe measures to dismantle everything supporting the West in fueling Kyiv’s war machine. We are already taking action.”
The drone, containing an unknown explosive device, was found by an airport employee in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, designated as “critical infrastructure” by German investigators.
Leipzig serves as a crucial NATO airport used for transporting armaments, ammunition, weapons, and other military supplies to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo companies.
The detection of the drone, positioned beside a Ukrainian cargo plane, signals “a heightened level of threat” for Germany, according to the German interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He noted that the incident appears to be part of a “professional hybrid threat scenario” rather than an amateur endeavor.
German authorities are currently investigating the incident and have not disclosed the drone’s origin. However, U.S. intelligence officials informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports suggest the drone likely belonged to the Russian government.
Berlin is responding cautiously by bolstering anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature attributions. Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing fact-finding process and the need to refrain from premature comments amid the investigation.
Warnings have been issued that Russia is employing drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, including in the lead-up to upcoming regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt highlighted the evolving threat landscape faced by Germany on a daily basis.
Germany has been targeted by hybrid warfare tactics such as espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert actions by foreign powers seeking to destabilize and bring about political and social changes. Recent incidents include a foiled Russian plot to assassinate a German defense contractor CEO and the arrest of a man suspected of spying for Russia.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s online interference in Germany, with a focus on undermining Ukraine’s war effort and destabilizing democracies, particularly in Germany, France, and Ukraine. The ISD reported a campaign named Operation Overload involving disinformation efforts targeting German politics and society.
Amidst these escalating tactics, questions arise about the threshold between defense and direct conflict, with concerns raised about the potential for serious harm resulting from aggressive attacks on critical infrastructure and other targets in Germany. Lavrov’s recent statements signify a departure from Russia’s previous denials of interference in Western nations, indicating a more aggressive stance towards Europe, the West, and NATO.
